Still Not Back to Normal After a Concussion?
A new light therapy treatment may be able to help.
Headaches, dizziness, fatigue, anxiety, brain fog.
What is transcranial light therapy?
Transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM) uses specific wavelengths of near-infrared light applied through the scalp to reach the brain.
Inside brain cells, this light interacts with the mitochondria—the part of the cell responsible for producing energy.
This can lead to changes in energy production, blood flow, and cellular activity in the brain.
These are some of the same processes affected after a concussion.
This is important because after a concussion, the brain is often left in a weakened state:
Energy production drops
Blood flow can be reduced
Inflammation can remain elevated
Research on light therapy has demonstrated beneficial effects on:
Cellular energy production
Blood flow
Inflammatory activity in the brain
The same core processes that are disrupted following a head injury.
What the research shows:
In a randomized placebo-controlled trial in patients with mild traumatic brain injury, transcranial light therapy improved working memory, verbal learning, sleep quality, and post-concussion symptoms compared to sham treatment.
Lee et al., Journal of Neurotrauma, 2025
A systematic review of human traumatic brain injury studies reported improvements in cognitive function, including memory, attention, processing speed, and executive function following treatment.
Zeng et al., Frontiers in Neurology, 2024
In patients with chronic traumatic brain injury, transcranial light therapy increased cerebral blood flow and oxygenation, with associated improvements in cognitive performance.
Carneiro et al., Photobiomodulation, Photomedicine, and Laser Surgery, 2019
Even with research like this, most people are still told to just go home and take it easy after a concussion.
But many people don’t fully recover—and continue to experience:
brain fog
headaches
dizziness
fatigue
anxiety
If the underlying issues affecting energy, blood flow, and inflammation don’t fully resolve, symptoms can persist much longer than expected.
Transcranial Light Therapy may be a good option for you if:
your symptoms aren’t improving as expected
you’ve been told everything looks “normal,” but you don’t feel normal
you’re struggling with normal daily activities
you've already tried other therapies
What patients are saying.
While every case is different, some patients notice changes quickly:
My son experienced a concussion from a bike accident. He was having issues with processing thoughts and communicating. I took him to Precision Health and the relief was almost immediate. We left the office and my son stated that he felt more clear headed and was having an easier time communicating. ~C.C.
I took my son to Precision Health after being referred for specialized concussion care. My son was thoroughly evaluated with a neurological assessment among other testing. After treatment, he immediately could feel a difference. ~A.M.
Individual results may vary.
